Getting a job in Spain as a non EU citizen.

One of the questions I get asked at Just Law Solicitors is how can I work in Spain as a non EU citizen. Of course, this question has become more common post Brexit with citizens of the United Kingdom being classed as a third country. Third country nationals also include example the United States and Canada.
 
For a non-EU foreigners to work in Spain, they must have a work visa and a residence permit. To be able to work in the country you must be over 18 years of age. However, it is also possible to work from 16 to 18, as long as you have authorisation from your parents or legal guardians.
 
For the work visa, the requirements are different if you want to work independently or as an employee. If you want to work on your own (open a business), it is possible to enter the country with a tourist visa and change your status once you settle in Spain.
 
If you want to work as an employee, i.e. become an employee in Spain the visa is only granted when you have a job: that is, you must have the job before traveling, since you must present a letter from your prospective employer to the Immigration authorities.
 
To look for a job in Spain you can contact the State Public Employment Service (SEPE). In addition to its website, it is a free service.
 
If you prefer to look for a job online, the best sites are http://www.computrabajo.es, www.infojobs.net, and www.acciontrabajo.es. Never give bank your details.
 
It is advisable to check whether your qualification is comparable in Spain. Some of the most demanding sectors may require a refresher or leveling courses. For example Nursing, Law.
